Chapter Thirteen
My mother surprises us with a new hamburger dish for dinner. This one she calls Indian curry. Itâs meat and peas with curry powder mixed in. She serves it over rice. Not that Iâm hungry, anyway. I have way too much on my mind. Friday is coming closer and closer every second.
All during dinner, my brother-the-brain just keeps talking about college. Mostly, itâs about where heâd like to go. My parents keep looking at each other and shaking their heads. I guess theyâre all expensive schools.
For once, Iâm glad everyone is ignoring me.
After dinner, I look at what I have written down for my report and open the one book on soybeans I have. Itâs so boring, I almost go to sleep reading it. This just isnât going to work. Unless I come up with something better, my report is going to stink.
Iâm trying to think what to do when this idea hits me. I canât use the school library now, but thereâs 57th Street Books. Theyâre real nice about letting you look around and read before you buy. They even have places to sit.
My parents must still be freaked out about my brotherâs college thing, because they barely notice when I tell them Iâm going to the bookstore.
57th Street Books is real cool. Since itâs in the basement of an apartment building, the only view you get from the windows is feet going byâexcept you can see whole dogs. I go into the second room, the one that has books on food. The trouble is, the only books they have on soybeans are cookbooks. I look through them anyway, hoping Iâll find something exciting.
The bookstore is pretty quiet, but I keep noticing people going to the next room. After a while, I get curious and follow a man in a blue sports jacket. Iâm surprised to see rows of chairs and a table in front. Then I see the sign and remember. Itâs the same sign Yvonne and I noticed on the window advertising the talk Shaneâs mother is doing about her book. Sheâs off standing in the corner talking to one of the people who works at the bookstore. I check out the chairs for Shane, but heâs not there.
Nobody seems to be sitting in the first row, so I take a seat on the end of it. Who knows? Maybe her book has something about soybeans in it.
âGood evening, everyone,â the bookstore employee says, standing in front of the table. âI have the honor to introduce tonightâs speaker, Sophia Calavedo, author of Cindi and Akhenaten. Itâs part of the Time Travelersâ series.â
Everyone applauds, and I get the feeling thereâs not much chance sheâll be saying anything about soybeans.
Sophia Calavedo comes up behind the table. Her golden hair, which is the same color as Shaneâs, is done up in a bun thing. Sheâs wearing the same black dress she had on for the Albanysâ party, but sheâs added a jacket and different jewelry. I bet sheâs the kind who has one of those mix-and-match wardrobes I always see in magazines.
